OBJECTIVE

Engage prospective recruits with a simulation of what it’s like to skydive with the U.S. Army Golden Knights using the latest VR technology.

To experience the exhilaration of skydiving with the Golden Knights, we profiled Sergeant First Class Lopez as he embarked upon one his 5000+ jumps.

SFC Lopez described how he helps to train new recruits, performs at competitions and offered some tips for how to find focus in the sky. We then affixed a 360 camera to his helmet just inches from his face. Two microphones were attached to each diver, transmitting audio signal to our sound mixer and to a local recording device stored in the suit of each diver. Audio and 360 Video recording was also setup in the cockpit. This enabled us to capture communications amongst the diving team, heightening the realism of the VR experience.

 
 

PUTTING THE PUZZLE TOGETHER

Combatting Carolina’s intermittent rain clouds and performing a bit of trial and error with several camera-helmet mount configurations, we managed to capture 8 jumps over 2 days of shooting, with a third set aside as rain contingency that we thankfully did not need to utilize.

FINISHED PRODUCT

We worked with AdTheorent, an innovative ad-tech services provider, to deliver an interactive, non-linear 360 degree recruiting video experience, triggered from a mobile web banner ad. The audience demographic was targeted to match that of typical Army recruits. 


MOBILE DEMO

AdTheorent’s demo video illustrates the visitor’s journey from browsing a mobile webpage to discovering the ad unit and engaging with the 360 VR experience.

 
 

TRIVIA

The Golden Knights were formed in 1959 with the intent of competing in the relatively new sport of skydiving, which at that time was dominated by the Soviet Union. Since then team members have broken 348 world records.
